Yun Hyong-keun House 1983 / 2026

The Estate of Yun Hyong-keun has conserved and restored the house where Yun Hyong-keun (1928–2007), a leading figure of Korean Dansaekhwa, lived and worked. The house is now open to the public as the Yun Hyong-keun House. Opening to the public for the first time nearly 20 years after the artist’s death, the house is a place where Yun Hyong-keun’s life and artistic vision have taken shape over time.

The Yun Hyong-keun House stands on a site acquired in 1963 by the artist’s father-in-law, Kim Whanki, a pioneer of Korean abstract art. Yun Hyong-keun lived here from 1967 until his death in 2007. In 1983, he demolished the existing house and built a new home where living and working spaces coexist. The house was designed by his younger brother, Yun Do-Geun, who was then a professor of architecture at Hongik University. Yun Hyong-keun was closely involved in the design of the house, from its spatial functions to the selection of materials, allowing his aesthetic sensibility to permeate the entire space.

The Yun Hyong-keun House Conservation and Restoration Project focused on preserving the original form and atmosphere of the architecture. In addition to the spaces where the artist lived, as well as his furniture and personal objects, the house retains traces of his artistic practice and daily life, serving as a living archive of the artist and an important foundation for identifying his body of work.

For Yun Hyong-keun, who expressed profound reflections on nature and humanity, and on life and the spirit, through restrained colors and compositions, the house was another work. The Yun Hyong-keun House serves as a space through which his artistic world can be fully understood. As they walk through the house, visitors can experience firsthand his view of life and art as inseparable.
